Guardians have 3 classes: Titan, Hunter and Warlock. Each class is further divided into 3 subclasses.

Titan is the "tank" class that wears heavy armor. Titans are divided into 3 subclasses, Striker, Defender and Sunbreaker.
While Striker is a class that specializes in close-quarters combat with the devastating Fist of Havoc, Defender is a class that protects and supports its allies with a force field named Ward of Dawn.
Sunbreaker, introduced in The Taken King expansion, uses Hammer of Sol to summon a flaming, exploding hammer and wreak destruction among enemies.

Hunter is the agile class that strikes with speed and precision. Hunter is divided into 3 subclasses, Gunslinger, Bladedancer and Nightstalker.
Gunslinger is ideal for players who want to play Destiny as a standard first-person shooter while Bladedancer wrecks havoc not only from afar but also up close.
Nightstalker, introduced in The Taken King expansion, uses Shadowshot to tether a large group of foes to a Void Anchor, slowing and suppressing them for your Fireteam.

Warlock is the "squishy" spell-casting class with both offensive and defensive AoE prowess. Warlock is divided into 3 subclasses, Voidwalker, Sunsinger and Stormcaller.
Voidwalker is a powerful "nuker" class with abilities similar to mages of RPG games. Sunsinger has support abilities that enhances their teammates and allow them to quickly revive their allies.
Stormcaller, introduced in The Taken King expansion, uses Stormtrance to chain arc lightning from your hands.
