Damage Type is the type of elemental damage the weapon fires. The default elemental damage is Kinetic (no elemental damage). Certain enemies' shields are susceptible to certain types elemental damage. For example the Hive Wizard's shield is weak to Solar damage and the Fallen Captain's shield is weak to Arc damage.

Your guardians' supers also deal various elemental damage. Titan's Fist of Havoc deals Arc damage while Gunslinger's Golden Gun deals Solar damage.
